Taking on bugs: Insecticides for 2016
Unpredictable in their numbers and economic impact, insect pests continue to be a challenge to producers. And while the list of new products available may be small, it’s imperative to look at what’s inside the packaging. New formulations, advanced formulation technologies and broad-spectrum control bring a powerful punch when needed. Usage rates and tank-mixing options add to their flexibility in targeting invasive pests.
Fastac EC insecticide contains the active ingredient alpha-cypermethrin, and controls a broad spectrum of piercing-sucking and chewing pests, including aphids, beetles and stinkbugs. It can be tank mixed with a wide variety of products, and provides both knockdown and residual control for soybean producers.
Cobalt Advanced delivers both knockdown and residual control with two modes of action: chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin. It controls egg, larvae, nymph and adult development stages in a wide variety of pests.
For soybeans, Cobalt Advanced targets the soybean aphids, bean leaf beetles, spider mites and others. In corn, it targets pests including western bean cutworms, European corn borers and cereal leaf beetles. No tankmixing is required, and Cobalt Advanced is tankmix-compatible with other pesticides, nutrients and adjuvants.
Intrepid Edge is registered for use in soybeans, peanuts and pecans. It combines spinetoram and methoxyfenozide to provide knockdown and residual control for a variety of worm species, including corn earworms, loopers and armyworms.
Both active ingredients in Intrepid Edge were awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award and provide broad-spectrum control of foliage and pod-feeding insects through contact and ingestion. Intrepid Edge is tankmix-compatible with other pesticides, nutrients and adjuvants.
Seeker insecticide, which is pending regulatory approvals, is the first new chemistry in the Midwest insecticide market in more than 10 years. It brings a novel chemistry, the sulfoximines, allowing it to work throughout the plant to deliver control of a broad spectrum of pests in a wide variety of Midwest row crops. Registration is anticipated in 2014 for soybeans and wheat.
Two modes of action penetrate the plant canopy to target aphids, weevils, beetles and other insects out of the direct line of spray. Upon registration, Seeker will offer long-lasting control at a very low use rate. The tankmix is compatible with other pesticides, nutrients and adjuvants for grower convenience.
Skyraider insecticide for soybeans has a formulation of two different modes of action — bifenthrin and imidacloprid, which controls aphids, army cutworms, armyworms, Japanese beetle adults, leafhoppers, mites and cutworms. Its increased ratio of a pyrethroid supports rapid knockdown, and its longer-lasting residual activity is driven by its neonicotinoid component. It has translaminar and systemic movement for improved penetration and relocation of the active ingredients throughout the plant, including feeding sites on the underside of leaves.
Vulcan insecticide is a liquid formulation of chlorpyrifos for use in corn, soybeans and wheat. It has high-speed knockdown and residual activity on a broad range of pests. Vulcan is formulated with MANA’s proprietary Voxien Technology, which has favorable environmental and handling characteristics, including extremely low odor. Vulcan is the first enhanced chlorpyrifos product of its kind.
