Anna Ewers Talks Beauty, Brooklyn, and Balenciaga
To say that Balenciaga was the first runway you walked isn’t too shabby. To say it was Alexander Wang’s inaugural collection for the house is even better. Now, almost two years later, model Anna Ewers secured yet another first with the fashion label: She’s the face of B. Balenciaga—Wang’s introduction to the fragrance category—that landed on shelves just last month. The eau is somewhat like the German catwalker in that it’s unexpected: Lily of the valley (the flower that Vanessa Traina Snow, a friend and collaborator of the designer, carried down the aisle) mingles with green edamame notes and cashmeran wood to produce a blend that’s fresh yet undeniably seductive. “I wanted a lot of dimensions and layers—it’s feminine, but at the same time there’s a masculine element to it,” explained Wang. “I wouldn’t say it’s a one-note kind of fragrance for sure.” Ewers—with her sultry curves and bombshell blond looks—is reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot (making her the perfect candidate for the 2015 Pirelli calendar), but she also has a tough, tomboy side (seen in her swift stomp down Balenciaga’s gridded Spring 2015 catwalk that filled with undulating clouds of smoke—reflective of the frosted, cracked-glass perfume bottle). In other words, she’s hardly a one-note kind of girl. Here, the super talks about her initial meeting with Wang, her move to Brooklyn, and why beds should be set up backstage.
I remember the very sweet fragrances my friends wore in high school, like candy fragrances.
B. Balenciaga is hardly candy. This must be a major upgrade.
Oh, yeah! I love that it’s very fresh and woodsy, and very green as well.
Where do you typically spray your perfume?
Just on my wrists and on my neck.
Do you remember the first time you met Alexander Wang?
I met him early last year for the casting of my first Balenciaga show, and it was his first Balenciaga show as creative director, as well.
Were you nervous?
Very nervous—I tripped when I walked in!
I don’t believe it!
You obviously still made a good first impression. What is the trickiest runway you’ve ever had to walk?
My first Versace runway. I was wearing a very tight dress and I had to go up stairs.
Do you have any beauty essentials you keep on hand at all times during fashion month?
Good makeup removers. I take my makeup off after every show and put a good moisturizer on. I also use lots of conditioner at night in my hair.
Which makeup remover is your go-to?
I use Bioderma. It’s very natural and simple.
Always a cult-favorite formula for models. What about your must-have moisturizer and conditioner?
Weleda Skin Food—it smells so good. And Aveda Damage Remedy conditioner.
Since you have to take your makeup off multiple times a day during show season, how do you keep your skin in check?
I think it’s being young.
Youth is always helpful to have on your side. Have you learned any good beauty tricks backstage?
Yeah, I can open one of my eyes a little bit while the other is closed, and sometimes I watch!
Do you ever fall asleep while someone is doing your makeup?
Sometimes I’m very tired and I fall asleep. But it’s not good because you have to look up, look down, so you have to be a little “on it.”
Getting your makeup done all day—especially with early call times—isn’t as easy as it sounds.
I wish they had, like, big beds and I could just lie down!
I’ve heard that Katy Perry has a reclining makeup chair, so anything is possible. Do you have any tips for beating jet lag?
During fashion week, I don’t get a lot of sleep, so whenever I get the time to sleep, I sleep very easily. I don’t suffer from jet lag a lot. I can sleep wherever, whenever.
So maybe you don’t need a bed after all. How do you keep your blond looking its best during the season?
It’s my natural hair color!
You don’t even highlight it?
No, I don’t.
Are you from a family of blonds?
No, one of my sisters has dark brown hair, the other is naturally platinum blond. My dad has black hair and my mom has blond hair.
Where do you fall among your sisters?
I’m the youngest.
I bet you picked up a lot of beauty tips from your sisters.
They never used makeup…
So they never did your hair or makeup as a kid?
No. Once they cut my hair when I had my first hair growing as a baby. My mom got so mad!
Did you always want to be a model growing up?
Not at all. I never really thought about it, but when I started, I was like, “Why not?” It’s great, you meet so many interesting personalities. I love it. It’s so much fun.
How do you stay in shape?
I like to ride bicycles, and I walk a lot.
You’re known in the industry for your incredible figure. Do you have a favorite part of your body that you like to play up?
I think modeling gave me confidence, but I don’t really think about my body a lot.
Since Alexander Wang knows how to throw one hell of an after-party, how do you celebrate after fashion month ends?
I have a very good, healthy—well, not necessarily healthy—dinner.
What do you indulge in?
Good Italian food.
Do you have a favorite restaurant in Paris?
Italian restaurants I don’t know too well in Paris, but I like Brasserie Lipp a lot.
What do you order there?
Meat and potatoes. It’s German—it’s Alsace. I lived very close to [that French region growing up], actually.
What’s your favorite spot in New York?
I just moved from the Financial [District] to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and it feels much more like a neighborhood, which is nice.
What is your go-to restaurant in the Burg?
Do you know Aurora? It’s so good.
Who doesn’t love to splurge on Italian! What’s the toughest thing about being a model?
Fashion week and being awake for so long—not having time to sleep and rest properly.
Well, if they get those beds backstage…
Yeah, soon! Next season.
